Teotihuacan on the ground

No balloon and no 4 a.m. alarm: a van from Reforma, a tasting stop, the archaeological zone with the entry ticket included and a lunch stop on the way back. Guests rave about the guide at the pyramids, but a run of recent reviews describes pickups that never came.

Teotihuacan Day Tour from Mexico City

About this experience

This is the cross-sell, not a balloon trip. For $52 you get an air-conditioned vehicle from Mexico City, parking fees, bottled water and a tasting of alcoholic drinks, and the itinerary marks admission to the archaeological zone as included. The main pickup is the front entrance of the Sheraton Maria Isabel at Reforma 325; the listing also names the Barcelo Mexico Reforma, the Camino Real in Anzures, Avenida 5 de Mayo 47 and the Parque Mexico boutique hotel. The plate number arrives the day before. Lunch at Restaurante Huehueteotl is not included.

The day runs about 6 to 7 hours: an hour's drive, a half-hour agave, obsidian and tasting talk at a craft shop in San Juan Teotihuacan (guests call it a tourist trap, with cheap souvenirs), around two hours in the zone, lunch, and the drive back. Guests report a local guide meeting them at the site, often a guide named Susana, and her 90-minute walk is the reason for most 5-star reviews. A guest booked on the 9:00 departure was back by 3:30 p.m. You won't climb: the Pyramid of the Sun has been closed since 2020 and the Pyramid of the Moon since the shooting of 20 April 2026 (INAH), and you pass metal detectors at the gate.

The problem is reliability. Since December 2025, several 1-star reviews describe pickups that didn't show (February and March 2026), guests told to wait from 7:40 or 8:00 for a 9:00 tour that came at 9:30, a cancellation by WhatsApp the day before with no refund (September 2026), and cramped minibuses with perimeter seating and no air conditioning. A private option exists on the same listing if you'd rather not share a van.

  • Zone entry ticket marked as included in the itinerary
  • No 4 a.m. start: guests report 9:00 departures
  • Guests praise the guide who meets them at the site
  • Bottled water, parking and a tasting included
  • Private option on the same listing

What guests say

★★★★★

I booked the tour the night before for six adults and quickly received a response and information via WhatsApp (a necessity in Mexico City). [...] Our guide-Susana-met us there. She gave us an excellent tour that lasted roughly 90 minutes.

Our driver Marco picked us up in Mexico City, he was very helpful and friendly and made sure we got to the tour on time. Our tour guide at the site Susanna was incredibly knowledgeable and made the experience great as well.

Tips before you book

  • Don't book it for your last day in the city. If the van doesn't come, you want a second chance.
  • Message the operator on WhatsApp the day before and get the plate number, the driver's name and the exact time in writing.
  • If nobody shows within 20 minutes, a ride-hail car to the zone costs roughly what the tour does, guests say. Report the no-show to Viator straight away.
  • Bring cash for lunch and tips, a hat and sunscreen. There's little shade on the Avenue of the Dead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Teotihuacan entry ticket included?

The itinerary marks admission to the archaeological zone as included. If you go on your own, it's 210 MXN for foreign visitors in 2026, free under 13 and over 60.

Are there problems with this tour?

Yes, for some guests. Several 1-star reviews from December 2025 to September 2026 describe no-show pickups, long waits, a cancellation without refund and cramped minibuses. Many other guests had a smooth day and a very good guide.

Can you climb the pyramids on a Teotihuacan day tour?

Not in 2026. The Pyramid of the Sun has been closed to climbing since 2020, and the Pyramid of the Moon has been closed until further notice since 20 April 2026.

Should I take a balloon flight or a day tour?

A balloon shows you the whole city plan from above at sunrise; a day tour gives you a guide on the ground. Our guide balloon or day tour compares them.
