The 2026-27 balloon season

The rains are over and the dry season is starting in the Teotihuacan valley. Here is what each month until April brings for a sunrise flight, and which dates sell out.

Balloons fly over Teotihuacan all year, but the calendar splits in two. From June to September it rains on most afternoons and many mornings start in cloud. From November to April the sky is clear, the air is calm at dawn and the mornings are cold.

This post walks through the coming season with ten years of weather data, the sunrise times, the cold-front forecast and the holidays that fill the baskets.

The quick answer

November to April is the dry season: 6 to 33 mm of rain a month, against 118 to 142 mm from June to September. December and January are the coldest dawns (lows around 6 to 7 C) and the clearest skies. Cold fronts bring the wind that cancels flights; the weather service expects 56 this season. The busiest dates are the winter holidays and the March 2027 equinox, which falls in the Holy Week school break.

When is the hot air balloon season in Teotihuacan?

Flights run all year, weather permitting. The dry season from November to April gives the best odds of a clear, calm sunrise.

We pulled ten years of daily data (2015 to 2024) for the valley from the Open-Meteo ERA5 archive and averaged it by month. Sunrise times are for the 21st of each month at Teotihuacan from sunrise-sunset.org; Mexico has had no daylight saving time since 2022, so the clock stays put all winter.

Read the sunrise column with the launch in mind. Balloons inflate in the dark and take off around sunrise, so the January light comes at 7:12, half an hour later than in March. That makes a winter morning a little less brutal than a spring one.

How cold is a sunrise balloon flight in winter?

Expect 5 to 8 C at the launch site in December and January, sometimes colder. The average January low is 6.5 C, and the low comes right around take-off.

The valley sits at about 2,300 m, and on a clear night the ground loses its heat fast. Guests of the most reviewed flight keep saying the same thing. One from September 2026 wrote: "Be sure to prepare for freezing weather at that hour of the morning and the burning on your back when in the air balloon." Both halves are true: the burner over your head is hot, the air around you is not.

Wear layers you can peel off, a hat that will not blow away, and closed shoes for a landing in a ploughed field. By 10:00 it is warm, and the jacket stays in the van.

Do cold fronts cancel balloon flights in Teotihuacan?

Yes, some of them. A cold front brings wind and sometimes cloud, and pilots stay on the ground above roughly 10 to 15 km/h of wind.

Mexico's weather service forecasts 56 cold fronts for the 2026-27 season, above the average of 50, with about 32 of them between November and February, Uno TV reported. Not every front reaches central Mexico with force. The ones that do can end a morning early: on 31 January 2026 cold front 32 forced three emergency landings and stopped flights.

Cancellations are handled well when the company is organised. A Cielo Azteca guest in October 2026 wrote that "they had to cancel due to excessive wind speed" but rescheduled for the next day over WhatsApp. Book your flight for the first morning of your stay, so a cancelled dawn still leaves a spare one.

What happens at Teotihuacan on the March 2027 equinox?

The equinox falls on Saturday 20 March 2027 at 14:25 Mexico City time. Tens of thousands of people come to the zone that weekend, and INAH sets special rules.

The March equinox lands at 20:25 UTC on 20 March 2027 (Star Walk), which is 14:25 in central Mexico. Crowds dressed in white come to soak up energy at the pyramids. The 2025 equinox drew 36,255 visitors, per INAH.

For 2026 INAH ran a special operation on 21 and 22 March: no backpacks, large bags, chairs, speakers, alcohol, pets or drones, and the museums closed. The 2027 rules are not out yet; expect something similar. In 2027 the equinox also opens the Holy Week school break, which runs from 22 March to 2 April (Infobae). Balloon demand peaks with it. If you want a quiet flight, avoid that fortnight; if you want the spectacle, book early and fly on a weekday.

Which dates are busiest for Teotihuacan balloon flights in 2026-27?

The winter school holidays (21 December to 6 January), the long weekends and the equinox with Holy Week. Weekends are always busier than weekdays.

Mexico moves several holidays to Mondays, and each one makes a long weekend for Mexico City families, who drive out for a sunrise flight. Sundays also bring crowds into the zone, because entry is free that day for nationals and residents. El Universal counted up to 2,000 balloon passengers a day in peak season. Tuesday to Thursday outside the dates below is the calm option.

How far ahead should I book a balloon flight for the 2026-27 season?

One to two weeks ahead for an ordinary weekday, three to four weeks for holiday weekends, and as soon as your dates are fixed for the equinox and Holy Week.

There is little reason to wait. Every flight on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs nothing if your plans change. One exception to booking late: Globo Tetris confirms its bookings within 48 hours, so leave a margin on that listing.

The from-prices here run from $127 to $204 per person, and direct shared flights cost roughly 2,000 to 2,900 MXN. The Mexico City guide explains the 4 a.m. pickup, and the best time guide goes deeper on wind and light.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a hot air balloon ride in Teotihuacan?

February, in our view: it is dry (about 8 mm of rain a month), the dawns are a little milder than in January, and the holiday crowds have gone. December and January are just as dry but colder and busier.

Do balloons fly in Teotihuacan in the rainy season?

Yes, flights run all year, but from June to September rain and low cloud cause more cancellations and hazier views.

When is the 2027 spring equinox at Teotihuacan?

Saturday 20 March 2027, at 14:25 Mexico City time. Expect very large crowds in the zone that weekend and special entry rules.

What time is sunrise at Teotihuacan in winter?

Around 7:05 in late December, 7:12 in late January and 7:00 in late February. Balloons inflate before that and take off around sunrise.
