Teotihuacan entry rules

The ticket price doubled for foreigners in January, and both big pyramids are off limits. Here is what a visit to the zone looks like after a balloon flight in late 2026.

Most balloon flights land before the archaeological zone opens at 8:00, and many packages then drop you at a gate for a walk among the ruins. That walk has new rules in 2026: a higher fee for foreign visitors, metal detectors at every entrance, and no climbing on either pyramid.

Everything below comes from INAH, the institute that runs the zone, unless we say otherwise.

The quick answer

Foreign visitors pay 210 MXN in 2026; Mexican nationals and residents pay 105 MXN, and children under 13 and over-60s enter free. The zone is open daily from 8:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30. You cannot climb the Pyramid of the Sun (closed since 2020) or the Pyramid of the Moon (closed since 20 April 2026). Expect a bag check and a metal detector arch at all five gates.

How much is the Teotihuacan entrance fee in 2026?

210 MXN for foreign visitors and 105 MXN for Mexican nationals and foreign residents with proof. Children under 13, over-60s and several other groups go free.

Until the end of 2025 everyone paid 100 MXN. A reform of the federal fees law split the price from 1 January 2026, and INAH confirmed the figures in Bulletin 106 of 13 March 2026. Tickets are sold at the zone's ticket offices and on INAH's official site. The legal fee is 209.09 MXN, rounded up to 210. Carry pesos in cash to be safe.

Watch for old figures in tour listings. Two of the listings on this site quote the fee in dollars, "14 USD" and "7 USD". The second is the old 100 MXN price. The official 2026 figure is 210 MXN.

What are Teotihuacan's opening hours, and which gate should I use?

The zone opens every day from 8:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. There are five gates; Gate 1 at the Ciudadela and Gate 5 behind the Pyramid of the Sun are the ones most visitors meet.

Balloons take off around 7:00 and flights last 30 to 60 minutes, so a breakfast stop usually fills the gap until the gates open. The zone is long: the Avenue of the Dead runs about 2 km from the Ciudadela in the south to the Pyramid of the Moon in the north. Pick the gate nearest what you want to see.

  • Gate 1: the south end, by the Ciudadela and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.
  • Gates 2 and 3: the west side, level with the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon; the murals museum is near Gate 3.
  • Gate 4: the gate set up for tour buses.
  • Gate 5: the east side behind the Pyramid of the Sun, by the site museum and the La Gruta cave restaurant.

Arrive at 8:00 if you can. The avenue has almost no shade, and by noon the sun at 2,300 m is fierce.

Can you climb the pyramids at Teotihuacan in 2026?

No. The Pyramid of the Sun has been closed to climbers since 2020, and the Pyramid of the Moon has been closed until further notice since 20 April 2026.

INAH's March 2026 bulletin is blunt: "Queda prohibido el ascenso a la Pirámide del Sol." The Pyramid of the Moon had reopened to its first level on 19 May 2025. On 20 April 2026 a gunman opened fire from it, killing a Canadian tourist and injuring 13 people before he died. The zone reopened on 22 April with the Moon closed "until further notice", per Bulletin 166. Our searches found no reopening announcement up to 22 October 2026.

You can still walk the Avenue of the Dead, the Ciudadela and the palace complexes around the Moon plaza. The best view of the pyramids from above is now from a basket, which is one honest argument for a balloon flight.

What security checks are there at the Teotihuacan entrances?

Since late April 2026 every gate has a metal detector arch, staffed with the National Guard. Bags are searched by hand and vehicles are checked.

Bulletin 178 of 27 April 2026 lists six arches at Teotihuacan: one at each of the five gates and one at the entrance to the murals museum. Backpacks and bags get a hand search with portable detectors, and cars are checked inside and in the boot. Allow an extra ten minutes at busy times.

A small backpack and water are fine, according to Excelsior. Leave behind coolers and picnic-size food, alcohol, glass bottles, sharp objects and drones without a permit. On equinox days the list is longer: in March 2026 INAH also banned backpacks, large bags, chairs and speakers. If your balloon package comes with a toast, finish it before the gate.

Which museums can you visit at Teotihuacan?

Three: the Museo de la Cultura Teotihuacana, the murals museum Beatriz de la Fuente, and the Museo de la Grandeza Teotihuacana, which reopened in June 2026 after 20 years.

INAH spent 37 million MXN on the zone, presented in Bulletin 238 of 8 June 2026: new ticket offices, paths, signs and a Digital Guide with themed routes. The two older museums got their first overhaul in about 40 years.

The headline is the Museo de la Grandeza Teotihuacana, built in 1962 and closed for two decades. Its new permanent show has 174 pieces, about 150 of them never displayed before. A temporary exhibition, Hule ritual, brings rubber balls from El Manati in Veracruz, including an original about 3,600 years old. Balloon packages rarely leave time for the museums. If they matter to you, a flight-only booking and your own pace beat a group schedule.

Which balloon tours include the Teotihuacan entry ticket?

Five listings on this site include the 210 MXN ticket, some only on certain options. Five do not, and one has no zone visit at all.

Read the option you book, not the listing title. We Fly includes the ticket only on its options with transport; Globo Tetris only on its all-inclusive option. The non-balloon day tour includes it too, at $52, if you want the pyramids without a 4 a.m. start.
