Booking choice: The balloon flight with cave breakfast, from $149 per person. Check dates Tour details
Teotihuacan is about 50 km by road north-east of Mexico City, and the balloon ports sit in San Martin de las Piramides beside the zone. Every balloon must be up by sunrise, so a day from the city starts with a pickup around 4:30 a.m., usually at the Angel of Independence on Paseo de la Reforma.
You can also skip the van: book the flight only and get to the port yourself, or sleep near the pyramids the night before. Here is how each version of the day works.
The quick answer
Pickups run from about 4:00 to 4:40 a.m., mostly at the Angel of Independence, and the drive takes about an hour. You land around 8:00; full-day options add breakfast, a shop stop and an hour or so in the zone, and drop you in the city around 1 to 2 p.m. Flight-only means being at the port by about 6:00, which is easiest from a hotel near the pyramids.

How far is Teotihuacan from Mexico City?
About 50 km by road from the centre, roughly an hour's drive before dawn. In afternoon traffic the same road can take two to three hours.
The ports line the federal Mexico-Tulancingo road around km 27 to 28 in San Martin de las Piramides. Al Sol Globos gives "approximately 50 km from the center of Mexico City". At 4:30 a.m. the motorway is empty, and the drive takes about an hour; vans that collect several groups add 30 to 40 minutes before they leave town.
The way back is the slow part. One Cielo Azteca guest called it "the 3 hour drive back to CDMX due to afternoon traffic".
What time is pickup for a Teotihuacan balloon from Mexico City?
Between about 4:00 and 4:40 a.m. Most listings meet at the Angel of Independence; the operator confirms the exact time the day before.
Pickups on the listings here:
| Flight | Pickup point | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Flight with cave breakfast | Angel of Independence, Reforma | Guests report 4:15 to 4:30; some hotel pickups |
| Dawn flight from $127 | Angel of Independence | About 4:30, confirmed a day earlier |
| Gran Vuelo with pickup | Angel of Independence | Time sent before the day |
| Cielo Azteca | Angel of Independence | Confirmed by WhatsApp |
| Balloon's Paradise | Reforma by the Angel, in front of the Sheraton | 4:40 for the first tier; later tiers later |
| Globo Tetris | Hotels on Reforma (transport options) | One guest: 5:15 at Marriott Reforma |
Save the operator's WhatsApp number when the confirmation arrives, and answer it. One Globo Tetris guest stood at the meeting point from 4:40 to 5:15 while a subcontracted driver moved the time to 5:40 without telling her, and missed the flight.
Pickup at the Angel, a sunrise flight, a cave breakfast and the ruins, all in one booking.
Check dates for the balloon flight with cave breakfastWhat does a balloon day from Mexico City look like, hour by hour?
Pickup around 4:30, take-off around 7:00, landing around 8:00, then breakfast, a shop stop and the ruins. Back in town around 1 to 2 p.m.
A typical full-day option, from the listings and guest reports:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 4:00 to 4:40 | Pickup on Reforma; the van collects other groups, then drives about an hour |
| 5:30 to 6:30 | Check-in at the port: coffee and bread, a weigh-in, lockers, inflation |
| About 7:00 | Take-off near sunrise (6:38 in late March, 7:12 in late January) |
| 7:30 to 8:00 | Landing, a toast and the certificate; the chase truck brings you back |
| 8:30 to 9:30 | Breakfast in a cave restaurant, about 30 minutes |
| 9:30 to 10:30 | Agave, obsidian and mezcal stop with a shop, 30 minutes to an hour |
| 10:30 to 12:00 | Free time in the zone, about 1 to 1.5 hours, usually without a guide |
| 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. | Drop-off back in the city, traffic permitting |
One flagship guest summed it up: picked up at 4:30, "dropped off at our hotel around 1". Another, on the same tour, got back at 1 to 2 p.m. and found the day "a little long" after a 4 a.m. alarm.

Can I book flight only and get to San Martin de las Piramides myself?
Yes. Every multi-option listing has a flight-only option, and you need to be at the port by about 6:00 a.m. That is easiest from a hotel near the pyramids.
From Mexico City, the realistic ways to make 6:00 are a taxi or Uber booked the night before, or your own car. Public buses from Terminal Autobuses del Norte start around 6:00, too late for a sunrise flight. The operator sends the port location after booking; Al Sol Globos flies from km 28 of the Mexico-Tulancingo road, Volar en Globo from Francisco Villa 85 in San Martin.
The smarter version is to sleep in San Martin de las Piramides or San Juan Teotihuacan. You get up at 5:30 instead of 3:45, walk into the zone when it opens at 8:00, and dodge the van. A Cielo Azteca guest who did the full package said they would "organize with a balloon company directly, take a taxi to the launch point, and take a taxi back" next time.

Just the flight from the Al Sol port: 30 to 50 minutes in the air, insurance, coffee and a certificate. Bring yourself.
Explore the Al Sol Globos flight Tour detailsHow do you get back to Mexico City after a flight-only booking?
By the Autobuses Teotihuacan bus from the zone to Central del Norte, 60 MXN since October 2026, or by taxi. Uber pickups out here can be slow.
Buses leave from Gate 2 of the zone every 15 to 20 minutes for Terminal Autobuses del Norte and take 1 to 1.5 hours; the fare rose from 54 to 60 pesos in October 2026. Some routes also stop at Indios Verdes. A Volar en Globo guest wrote that "It was hard to find an uber back to the city"; another got a free ride back laid on by the company. Ask at check-in.
If you booked the Globo Tetris transport option without breakfast, the van brings you straight back: one guest was dropped off at 10:00, a five-hour round trip.

How long does the drive back to Mexico City take?
About an hour in light traffic. Most full-day vans leave the zone around noon and reach Reforma between 1 and 2 p.m.
Guests on the flagship and Gran Vuelo flights report hotel drop-offs at about 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. One wrote that "traffic was a bit heavy but we were back to our hotels by 2:00". Don't book a flight out of Mexico City the same afternoon; a dinner reservation at 7 is safe.
Several listings return to the meeting point, not your hotel. One flagship guest agreed to a hotel drop-off from the Basilica that never happened and took an Uber. Get the drop-off point in writing.
Gran Vuelo's all-inclusive option: pickup on Reforma, the flight, a cave breakfast and the drive back.
Check dates for the Gran Vuelo flight with pickupWhich Mexico City pickup tours are most reliable?
The big listings with thousands of reviews run like clockwork, by most accounts. Complaints about missed pickups cluster on a few listings.
The flagship (4.9 from 2,669 reviews) and Gran Vuelo (4.9 from 1,799) draw comments about punctual pickups and texts the day before. Problems we found in recent reviews: a missed pickup and a refund dispute with Globo Tetris's subcontracted drivers, and overselling into later flight tiers at Balloon's Paradise. Pick a listing that names a fixed pickup time, and confirm it the evening before.
Bring the booking on your phone, a charged battery and some pesos. If nobody shows by 15 minutes after the time, call the number in the confirmation, then Viator.
What should you bring for a 4:30 a.m. balloon pickup?
Warm layers, cash in pesos, ID and a small bag. Mornings are cold, and the zone has had airport-style security since April 2026.
- Layers: average lows are 6.5 C in January and 7 C in December. Flagship guests describe "a beautiful chilly morning", and "quite cold early in the morning".
- Pesos: 210 MXN for the zone ticket where it isn't included, plus any weight surcharge, photos and tips.
- ID: Mexican nationals and residents pay 105 MXN with proof; free entry for over-60s and under-13s.
- A small bag: metal-detector arches and bag checks at all five entrances since 27 April 2026 (Boletin 178). On the equinox weekend, backpacks and large bags are banned outright.
- Food for the van if you skip breakfast, and a hat and sunscreen for the ruins later.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get picked up at my hotel?
Some listings collect from hotels on or near Reforma; most use the Angel of Independence. Check the pickup field on the listing before you book.
Is there a train to Teotihuacan?
No. The new AIFA-Pachuca line has no station at Teotihuacan. The bus from Terminal Autobuses del Norte is the public option.
Can I take an Uber to the balloon port at 5 a.m.?
Usually, yes, if you book it ahead. The way back from the pyramids is harder: guests report waiting for a car.
What happens if my flight is cancelled for weather?
The operator offers another date or a refund. Every listing here also cancels free up to 24 hours before.
