Yes, balloons fly over the Teotihuacan pyramids, many of them on most mornings. No rule we found bans it, and guests report passing directly overhead. Others report drifting past at a distance. Both happen, sometimes on the same morning from different launch fields.
A balloon has no steering. The pilot climbs or drops to find air moving the right way, and that is all. Here is how the route works, how high you go, and what you see either way.
The quick answer
Most flights pass over or close to the pyramids, but no operator can promise it: the wind sets the direction. Balloons stay below about 800 m above the valley because of a nearby air base, and you spend 30 to 60 minutes in the air. Even on a wide pass you see both pyramids, the Avenue of the Dead and dozens of other balloons. You cannot climb either pyramid afterwards.

Do hot air balloons fly over the Teotihuacan pyramids?
Often, yes. On a calm morning with the right wind, balloons cross the archaeological zone; on others they pass beside it.
Guests on the same listings report both. On the Gran Vuelo flight, one wrote: "We had lucky wind therefore got to fly directly over the Pyramids. Depends on a little luck if get the views." Another, a few months earlier: "unfortunately due to wind conditions we did not get to fly directly over the ruins [...] the flight was very nice". A flagship guest in September 2026 wrote that the flight circled the Pyramid of the Sun and passed directly over it.
Operators quote high odds. Globopuerto, one of the balloon ports, gives a 95% chance of crossing the pyramids. Treat that as a sales line, not a promise.

Yes. Neither INAH, which runs the zone, nor AFAC, the aviation regulator, has a rule against flying over it that we could find. Landing inside it is another matter.
Operators openly sell flights "sobre la zona arqueologica", over the archaeological zone. Landing inside the zone happens only in emergencies, and AFAC investigates when it does. On 21 April 2026 a Balloons Paradise balloon ran out of fuel and came down about 200 m from the Pyramid of the Sun; AFAC said it would sanction the company.
INAH has warned since April 2023 that balloon tourism here is growing without enough control, and El Universal counted more than 120 balloons operating in January 2026. Rules may tighten. For now the sky over the zone is open.

How does the wind decide where the balloon goes?
The pilot controls height, not direction. Winds blow differently at different heights, so the pilot climbs or sinks to catch a layer moving towards the pyramids.
Balloons need light, steady wind, roughly under 10 to 15 km/h. On those mornings the air near the ground often moves differently from the air a few hundred metres up, which gives the pilot some choice. On a morning with one strong flow, there is no choice: you go where it goes.
The launch field matters too. Ports sit around San Martin de las Piramides, on different sides of the zone, and each company picks its field that morning. Where you land is wherever the chase truck can reach. One Globo Tetris guest's pilot "landed the balloon directly on a trailer".
How high do the Teotihuacan balloons fly?
Up to about 800 m above the valley. Operators say they are not allowed higher because of the nearby military air base.
The ceiling is an operator claim: one company's FAQ states it is not allowed above 800 m. Most of the flight is lower, a few hundred metres up, low enough to make out the terraces of the pyramids. The valley floor itself is about 2,300 m above sea level, so the air is thin and cold at dawn.
Height also changes what you see. Low over the zone, the pyramids fill the frame. Higher, you see how small the ruins are in a wide, flat valley of fields and agave.

How long is the balloon flight over Teotihuacan?
Between 30 and 60 minutes in the air, depending on the listing and the wind.
The listings give 30 to 45 minutes (We Fly, Gran Vuelo), 30 to 50 (Al Sol Globos) and 30 to 60 (the express flight). Take-off is around 7:00, after a 6:00 to 6:30 arrival at the port. The two-hour morning at the port is mostly waiting, inflating and the toast after landing.
Short flights do happen. A Gran Vuelo guest wrote that "the flight time was definitely less than 30 mins" on a calm-looking morning. If time in the air matters to you, read the minutes on the listing, not the trip length.

Up to 60 minutes in the air on the listing, from the We Fly port, with van, breakfast and the zone entrance included.

Both pyramids, the Avenue of the Dead, the sunrise over the hills and dozens of other balloons. You lose the straight-down shot, not the view.
The zone is compact: the Avenue of the Dead runs about 2 km. From a few hundred metres up and a kilometre away, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon are both in sight for most of the flight. Guests point out that the distant view is good too: one flagship guest saw the pyramids perfectly from afar before getting close-up views.
What many people remember is the balloons. Dozens lift off around the same time, and El Universal counted more than 120 operating in the valley. One guest: "floating over the pyramids along with dozens of other brightly colored balloons beyond our wildest imagination."

Which balloon tour flies closest to the pyramids?
None can promise it. Every company launches from fields around San Martin de las Piramides, and all of them depend on the same wind.
Ignore listing titles that say "over the pyramids" as a guarantee. Pick a flight on what you can check: time in the air, what the price includes, the pickup, the reviews, and the operator's current AFAC permit. Gran Vuelo and the flagship flight both have recent reviews from guests who flew straight over the Sun.
An earlier launch helps a little. Winds are usually calmest just after dawn, and some companies run later flight tiers that get grounded when the wind picks up. One Balloon's Paradise guest booked the first tier and was moved to the third, which was cancelled for wind.
The most reviewed flight here, with guests reporting passes right over the Pyramid of the Sun.
Check dates for the balloon flight with cave breakfastCan you climb the pyramids after the balloon flight?
No. The Pyramid of the Sun has been closed to climbers since 2020, and the Pyramid of the Moon has been closed until further notice since 20 April 2026.
INAH closed the Moon after a gunman opened fire from it on 20 April 2026, killing one tourist (Boletin 166). Since 27 April there are metal detectors at all five entrances (Boletin 178). You can still walk the Avenue of the Dead, the Citadel and the museums.
Which makes the balloon the only way to see the pyramids from above in 2026. The full-day options give you about an hour or 90 minutes in the zone after breakfast. More in balloon or day tour.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask the pilot to fly over the pyramids?
You can ask, and pilots try, but they can only change height to look for a better wind layer. Direction is up to the wind.
Is the flight cancelled if the wind blows the wrong way?
No. Flights are cancelled for strong wind, rain or fog, not for direction. A flight that misses the zone still flies.
Do I see the pyramids at all if we fly beside them?
Yes. The zone is about 2 km long, and from a few hundred metres up both pyramids stay in view for most of a flight.
Is it cold in the basket?
At take-off, yes. January mornings average about 6.5 C in the valley. The burner warms your head; dress in layers for the rest.
