The best time

On a clear winter morning the air over the valley is still, cold and bright, and the balloons go up in their dozens. The season and the hour you choose decide how often you get that morning.

Balloons fly over Teotihuacan all year, every morning the weather allows. The best months are the dry season, November to April, when it barely rains and the sky at dawn is usually clear. June to September is the rainy season, with storms most afternoons and more grounded mornings.

Below are the numbers: rain and temperatures by month from ten years of weather data, sunrise times, what gets flights cancelled, and how to dodge the crowds.

The quick answer

Fly between November and April. December to February is driest (6 to 8 mm of rain a month) but coldest at dawn, around 6 to 8 C; March and April are milder and still dry. Sunrise moves from 7:12 in January to 5:58 in June. Wind cancels more flights than rain, so book the earliest slot and a weekday, and keep a spare morning.

What is the best month for a balloon ride in Teotihuacan?

November to April, the dry season. February, March and November are the sweet spot: dry, with milder mornings than December and January.

December and January are the driest and the busiest, with the coldest take-offs. March brings the equinox crowds; April warms up. From May the first storms return. In the rainy months balloons still fly on many mornings, because rain here falls mostly in the afternoon, but grounded flights are more common.

How much does it rain in the Teotihuacan valley by month?

Very little from November to April, 6 to 8 mm a month in midwinter. June to September brings 118 to 142 mm a month and 16 to 22 wet days.

Averages for 2015 to 2024 at the zone, calculated from Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis data:

What time is sunrise at Teotihuacan?

Between about 5:58 in June and 7:12 in January. Take-off is planned around sunrise, so pickup times shift with the season.

Mexico dropped daylight saving time in 2022, so these times hold all year. Sunrise on the 21st of each month in 2026, from sunrise-sunset.org:

21 March6:3821 September6:24
21 April6:1321 October6:32
21 November6:4721 December7:05

In winter you take off with the sun already up or just rising; in summer, before it. The port asks you to arrive about 6:00 to 6:30 most of the year.

How cold is it at take-off?

Cold in winter: average lows of 6.5 C in January, 7 C in December and 7.7 C in February. By 10 a.m. you will be in a T-shirt.

The valley sits at about 2,300 m, and the thin air loses its heat overnight. Guests mention "a beautiful chilly morning", warming stations and hot coffee at the port. The burner overhead keeps your head warm in the basket. Wear layers you can take off and carry, a hat for later, and closed shoes for the landing field.

How often are Teotihuacan balloon flights cancelled?

No public figure exists, but wind is the usual cause, then rain and fog. Cold fronts in winter can ground the whole valley for a day.

Balloons need light, steady wind, roughly under 10 to 15 km/h. On 31 January 2026, cold front 32 caused strong gusts, three balloons made emergency landings and flights were suspended (El Universal). Decisions are made by each company: one flagship guest was grounded for wind while other companies launched.

What happens next: the operator offers another date or a refund. A Cielo Azteca guest in October 2026 had a wind cancellation, got clear messages on WhatsApp and was rebooked for the next morning. Plan the flight early in your trip so a spare morning is left.

Is the spring equinox a good day for a balloon ride?

For the atmosphere, maybe. For a calm visit, no: the 2025 equinox drew 36,255 people to the zone, with extra bans on bags and drones.

Crowds come to the pyramids around 21 March to greet the spring. INAH counted 36,255 visitors at the 2025 equinox (Boletin 106). In 2026 it banned backpacks, large bags, chairs, speakers, alcohol, pets and drones for 21 and 22 March and closed the museums. Climbing is closed this year anyway.

The 2027 equinox falls on Saturday 20 March, which adds a weekend crowd. Flights still go up at dawn, but book well ahead and expect a packed zone afterwards. The 2026-27 season post has the holiday dates.

Is it better to fly on a weekday?

Yes. Weekends and holidays are busier at the ports and in the zone, and Sunday is free entry for Mexican nationals.

El Universal reported up to 2,000 balloon passengers a day in peak season and more than 120 balloons in the valley (January 2026). Sunday's free entry for nationals and residents fills the zone. A Tuesday to Thursday flight means a calmer port and fewer people on the Avenue of the Dead.

Book the first flight tier where a listing has several. Early slots get the calmest air; later tiers are the first to be cancelled when the wind rises.
