Balloon or day tour?

One shows you the whole city of Teotihuacan at once, laid out on the valley floor at sunrise. The other walks you down the Avenue of the Dead with someone who can tell you what you are looking at.

A balloon flight costs $127 to $204 and starts at 4:30 a.m. A ground day tour from Mexico City costs from $52 and starts around 9. They are different days with different strengths, and plenty of people do both.

Here is how they compare, who should pick which, and the honest picture of the cheap day tour we list.

The quick answer

Pick the balloon for the view and the sunrise; pick a ground tour if you want a guide, the history and a later start. Most balloon packages give you an hour or so in the zone without a guide. The $52 day tour includes the entry ticket and guests praise its site guide, but recent reviews also report no-show pickups. The best combination is a flight-only booking and a night near the pyramids.

Balloon or day tour: what is the difference?

The balloon is a sunrise flight with a short, mostly unguided visit afterwards. The day tour is a guided walk through the ruins with transport, starting mid-morning.

Who should choose the balloon flight?

Anyone who wants the sunrise and the view of the whole site, and can face a 4 a.m. alarm. It is the only way to see the pyramids from above.

With both pyramids closed to climbing in 2026, the balloon is the only high viewpoint left. It suits couples, photographers and anyone ticking off a bucket-list morning. A Gran Vuelo guest: "hot air balloon is definitely a bucket list item but to do so over the pyramids is amazing."

It doesn't suit everyone. Pregnant travellers, people with heart or back problems and children under 3 to 5 (depending on the listing) can't fly, and most listings charge extra above 100 kg.

Who should choose a ground day tour instead?

History lovers, families with small children, anyone on a budget, and travellers who can't fly for health reasons.

The ground tour is about understanding the place: who built it, the Citadel and the Feathered Serpent temple, why the avenue lines up the way it does. Guests on the day tour we list keep naming the same site guide. One wrote: "She gave us an excellent tour that lasted roughly 90 minutes." Another said a local guide like her gets you far more out of the visit.

It also costs about a third of a flight, starts after breakfast and takes all ages; infants ride on laps. For a first visit to Mexico City with one day to spare, it is the safer pick.

Is the $52 Teotihuacan day tour any good?

Mostly, yes: 4.8 from 1,450 reviews, with warm praise for the site guide. But several 1-star reviews from December 2025 to September 2026 report pickups that never came.

The good: an air-conditioned van from the Sheraton Maria Isabel on Reforma, the entry ticket per the itinerary, water, parking, a tasting stop, a lunch stop, and a maximum of 20 travellers. The bad, in recent reviews: drivers who didn't show, a booking cancelled the day before, cramped seats in a full van, and a shopping stop one guest called "tourist trap store". Lunch is extra.

Our advice: book it with the free cancellation, confirm the pickup by WhatsApp the evening before, and keep an Uber as plan B. If the pickup fails, claim the refund through Viator.

Can you do the balloon and the pyramids in one day?

Yes. Most full-day balloon options add free time in the zone after breakfast. Expect about an hour to 90 minutes, usually without a guide.

The zone opens at 8:00, as the balloons land. On the flagship flight and similar packages you reach it around 10:30 after breakfast and the shop stop. A flagship guest found that "you get a good amount of time afterwards to look around the archeological site"; another wrote that the cave breakfast and the cooperative visit "could be skipped to save time".

Check the zone ticket: it is included on We Fly with transport, the express flight and the $127 listing, and extra (210 MXN) on most others.

Do balloon tours include a guide inside the archaeological zone?

Most don't. We Fly and Globo Tetris list a guide in the zone as excluded; Cielo Azteca is the exception, with an English and Spanish guide.

On most full-day options, the van drops you at a gate and picks you up later. That is fine if you have read up or downloaded the zone's new digital guide; INAH launched one in 2026. If you want someone to explain the ruins, pick Cielo Azteca, whose guests praise their host, or hire a licensed guide at the entrance.

Is it better to do the balloon and the ruins on separate days?

If you can, yes. Two mornings give you a calmer flight day and a proper guided visit, instead of a rushed hour after a 4 a.m. start.

The best version we know: sleep near the pyramids, book the Al Sol flight or another flight-only option, land by 8, eat, rest, and walk into the zone with fresh legs. Next day, or another trip, do the guided walk. From Mexico City, the cheap option is the day tour one day and a flight-only booking with a taxi another.

If you only have one day, the balloon full day is the better use of it. You can read about the ruins anywhere; you can't see them from the air anywhere else.

Just the flight from the Al Sol port, 30 to 50 minutes in the air: perfect if you sleep near the pyramids.

Can you climb the pyramids on either tour?

No. The Pyramid of the Sun is closed to climbers since 2020 and the Pyramid of the Moon since 20 April 2026, until further notice.

The Moon closed after the 20 April 2026 shooting (Boletin 166). Older reviews that mention climbing the Moon predate it. On either tour you walk the Avenue of the Dead, the Citadel and the plazas, and pass metal detectors at the entrance. Full rules in the entry fee and climbing post.
